Basketball Team Selection

&

Playing Time Guidelines

CYO Girls Basketball League

Player Selection:

It is the policy of the St. David CYO to field the most competitive team available at the Varsity level of play in every sport.  The players selected shall be at the sole discretion of the coach, with special attention given to the minimum and maximum number of players placed on the “A” team and its effect on the possible formation and make-up of a “B” team.

Candidates may be “cut” at the Varsity level of play.  If it is possible, based on the number of sign-ups and the availability of a coach, a second team will be formed.  This team will play in the “B” division of the region.  The “A” team coach will determine the players he/she wishes to carry.  If, after the “A” team has been formed, there are not enough players to field a “B” team, the “A” team coach will not be forced to expand the “A” team roster.  Every effort will be made to recruit additional players to field a “B” team.

Playing Time

7/8 Grade Varsity: Each player must play 3 minutes per game.  Coaches are encouraged to maximize playing time for all the players.  Unlike the Junior Varsity playing time rule, the minimum participation may be spread out across the entire game and does not have to be consecutive.

7/8 Grade Parish:  Because these divisions are largely instructional/recreational, we recommend that coaches informally try to let every player play at least 1/3 to 1/2 of each game depending on the size of the team. The Archdiocesan guidelines for “B” Leagues mandate at least 5 minutes of playing time per player per game.

5/6 Junior Varsity: Each player on a team must play at least 3 consecutive minutes per half (9 or more players per team) or 3 1/2 consecutive minutes per half (8 or fewer players per team). This rule is subject to review and change prior to playoffs. Note: It is likely that the playing time requirements for smaller teams (8 or fewer players) will increase to between 4 and 5 minutes per half, so make sure you are working with all of your players so they are ready to contribute come playoff time.

5/6 grade Parish: Each player on a team must play at least 1/2 half of each game, subject to the substitution rule described under “Length of Game – Parish.”

5/6 grade Parish: A mandatory player rotation to ensure equal playing time for all athletes is required. The rotation structure is as follows:

Every 3 minutes five new players will rotate into the game.  At the 3-minute mark of each 6-minute quarter the clock will stop in order to substitute five new players.  (Time keeper will stop the clock at exactly the 3-minute mark, however, the referee may allow the players to continue until an ongoing play to the basket is completed)
